Although M. calvescens
can be fairly common at certain sites, the species appears
to be generally uncommon in Costa Rica. Indeed, before this
study began specimens of the plant were either completely
absent or very scarce in herbarium collections in the country.
The species seems to occur naturally in a narrow altitudinal
zone, approximately 600 to 1000 meters, and on steep, relatively
unshaded slopes.
